Out of Home Care (Foster Care)

How can we help?

In today`s society it`s not uncommon for families to find themselves in crisis for any number of reasons. When extended family members and friends aren`t in a position to help out, foster care may be able to assist, by providing families with a temporary respite or emergency placement for their children .

Foster Care also provides placements for children who are unable to live with their parents, due to issues of risk. Placements are provided while parents work towards the children`s return to their care.

Interested in Becoming a Foster Carer?

Every day, foster carers across our region make an enormous difference in the lives of children and their families.

Who can be a foster carer?

Foster carers are ordinary people from all walks of life, backgrounds, ages and experiences. The more diverse our carer group is, the better we are able to match children with families. Foster carers are single, married or partnered, they own their own home or rent, they work in or away from their homes, some have children some don’t.

What makes a good foster carer?

Most importantly they possess the qualities of patience, flexibility, openness to learning, an ability to nurture, a good sense of humour, sense of fun and a commitment to children and young people.

Carers receive regular visits from caseworkers who provide on-going support and assistance. There are also training courses run to help carers develop new skills.

To assist with the financial costs, the government provides foster carers with a fortnightly, non-taxable allowance to assist with the cost of food, clothing and general living expenses for the child. More details of this allowance are provided in the information pack (details below)

Rewards of foster care

The biggest reward is knowing you are making a difference to a young person’s life. You will be a valued and valuable member of a caring team providing support for a child or young person.

You may play an important part in helping a child reach their goals and improve their quality of life now and into the future.
